The Four Musketeers: A Game of Daring and Discipline

The Four Musketeers blends the drama of swashbuckling adventure with the tension of push-your-luck blackjack mechanics.

Originally created for the BGG 2025 Traditional Deck Game Design Contest, this solo design transforms an ordinary deck of cards into a tense duel of wits, risk, and careful planning. It’s quick to learn, plays in around 15–20 minutes, and offers a surprising amount of depth for such a compact setup.

In The Four Musketeers, you take command of four brave heroes tasked with defeating the Cardinal’s elite forces. Your enemies come in two forms: the powerful Cardinal’s Guard (Kings and Queens), and the ever-pressing Henchmen, who threaten to overwhelm you if left unchecked. The Henchmen deck acts as both a ticking clock and a source of punishment, ensuring that hesitation carries a cost.

Do you aim for long-term progress by removing royal cards, or focus on immediate survival? Do you spend a strong attack defensively, or risk leaving a threat unresolved?

Each Musketeer can only withstand a single wound. Take a second, and your game ends in defeat. This game is a tough challenge, but your Joker cards add flexible ±1 modifiers that can help you in a pinch.

This game is a delicate balance of bravery and restraint, a swashbuckling tale of danger and thrill.

If you enjoy solo games that challenge your judgment as much as your luck, give this one a go ... play it now for free!

All for one, and one for all!

Some users on BoardGameGeek were nice enough to make the following comments during development of the game:

"It's a great game, with blackjack gameplay at its core, a race against the clock with the henchmen, card elimination with the royals, nice theme that really immerse you in the game."
"It was a tense battle until the end, which was a great feeling, and you have a sense of having more power when you reach the end, as royals are greatly diminished."
"Henchmen really adds a bunch of gameplay and strategy into your game."
"Great game, well explained rules, congrats."
"I liked the tension between wanting to get 11 to kill a Royal and having to defend against Henchman attack."
"What a fun game."
"It's also a unique combat style. Certainly not one I've personally seen before anyway, so hats off to you on that one."
"The general foundations and mechanics of this game are really good."
"The draw ratio of royals to aces in the Royal Guard deck is perfect."
